Happy Labor Day Community Members!

Students, parents, and school administrators are working through the new community service graduation requirements for incoming high school freshmen from the LEARNS Act. Since the rules for the change have not been developed or finalized yet, the school districts are currently operating as best as they can (read more HERE or watch at the 30 minute mark HERE).

Meanwhile, one way each of you can help, is to encourage local community organizations to sign up to become potential partner agencies via Bentonville’s School District. The hope is that once an organization is approved for Bentonville, all the districts in the area can also use the organization. Here’s the LINK for organizations to apply.

Job Opportunity

A non-profit organization in our state focused on making Arkansas a more equitable and desirable place to live is in need of a Data Manager. The organization intends for the data manager to play a key role in supporting campaign strategy and direct voter contact programs for the progressive movement in the state. They are looking for an individual with a combination of technical and political skills to manage data-related work internally and with partner organizations.

Send an email to me if you would like more information on the position responsibilities and qualifications. This role can be done remote and does not have to be filled by an Arkansan.

State Government Awareness

Arkansas Dept of Transportation (ADOT)

ADOT hosted two public involvement meetings last week for input on improvements to Arkansas Highways 59 (Siloam to MO state line) and 72 (Gravette to I-49). You can review the information and submit your personal feedback between now and Sept. 8th at 4:30 p.m. HERE.

94th General Legislative Assembly:

from Arkansas Advocate:

  • A federal judge late Thursday blocked Arkansas' new social media law intended to protect minors online hours before it would've been the first such regulation in the U.S. to take effect. U.S. District Judge Timothy Brooks said the lawmakers that drafted the Social Media Safety Act failed to craft legislation that actually protected children from social media's pitfalls, which Brooks acknowledged were real. The result was a vague, cumbersome bill that violates the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Read Hunter Field’s entire report HERE.

  • Late last month, Arkansas lawmakers gave final approval for an estimated $3.6 million construction contract for an underground tunnel connecting the state Capitol to a legislative office and meeting building roughly 50 yards away. The project has long been on some legislators' wishlists, but it has always been shot down as wasteful and unnecessary. Only one lawmaker spoke against it during a subcommittee meeting last week, but others have joined the chorus against the tunnel since. Read Hunter Field’s entire report HERE or What the Huck is Happening HERE.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders:

Looks like Governor Sanders may call a special session of the legislature in September, read “What’s So Special About This Session?” from For AR People to learn more on what may be on the agenda besides tax cuts. Hint, there’s a chance the legislature wants to weaken FOIA laws.

National Government ACTION Item

The information below is from Arkansas Advocates for Children & Families:

Ask Senator Boozman to right a wrong done to Marshallese Arkansans

Twenty-seven years ago, Congress mistakenly did not include Compact of Free Association (COFA) migrants in a major law on safety net programs. That law included SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. COFA migrants come from three countries, including the Marshall Islands, where the United States tested nuclear bombs. The U.S. has special migration agreements with them because of the damage done. And because of a badly written bill, Marshallese Arkansans, and other COFA migrants around the country, have not been able to enroll in the SNAP program that provides EBT benefits. The program helps families with low incomes buy food.

The AACF has a form (linked HERE) where you can send a message to Senator Boozman about the legislation.
